How Iris works, step by step →Iris vs other AI SEO tools →

What do Iris’s two scores mean?

Every page gets two: how well the page is built for search today, and how ready it is for the way people search next.

SEO score

Your on-page and technical SEO health, the signals classic search engines like Google rank on: title and meta description, heading structure, mobile friendliness, HTTPS, structured data, image alt text, canonical, robots and sitemap. A higher score means a cleaner, more crawlable page.

AI search score

How ready your page is to be quoted by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It rewards clear structured data, question style headings, scannable answers, author and freshness signals and an llms file. A higher score means an AI can understand and cite you.

How to read your score: Iris reads your page the way search crawlers first see it: the raw HTML, before JavaScript runs. Sites that build their content with JavaScript can score lower here than they actually rank, because the key tags aren't in that first HTML. The score measures fixable on-page & technical signals - Iris has no backlink index and never pretends to see who links to you. Instead, every audit now ends with Get linked & cited: a personalised off-site strategy naming where YOUR business should earn its next mentions, links and citations - real directories for your category, comparison pages to pitch, linkable assets only you could publish, and a 30-day plan.

How Iris works

How does Iris work, step by step?

From one audit to a site that is fixed and watched for you: what you do, and what Iris does while you do it.

  1. 1 Step 1 of 9

    Paste a URL

YouOne field. No signup for a single page.

IrisIris requests the page the way a crawler does, following redirects and reading the response headers rather than trusting what a browser renders.

  2. 2 Step 2 of 9

    It reads the markup

    YouNothing to configure.

IrisTitles, headings, meta, canonical, structured data and every internal link. JSON-LD is parsed and validated, not merely detected, invalid schema scores as absent, because that is what it is.

  3. 3 Step 3 of 9

    It judges the content

    YouNothing.

IrisWord count and depth, weighted by page type. A landing page is never scored against the rules for an article, and a near-empty page cannot score well no matter how clean its markup is.

  4. 4 Step 4 of 9

    You get a score

YouRead the number, then read the reason underneath it.

IrisOne score split into SEO, AI-search readiness and technical health, so you can see which part is dragging rather than guessing.

  5. 5 Step 5 of 9

    Fixes, in order

YouStart at the top. That is the whole instruction.

IrisRanked by impact, not by how easy each issue was to detect. Most auditors list what they found; the ordering is the part that saves you a day.

  6. 6 Step 6 of 9

    Re-scan and compare

YouCome back after you have changed something and run it again.

IrisIris stores the previous scan and shows you exactly what moved, what you fixed and what is still open, so the score becomes a track record, not a snapshot.

  7. 7 Step 7 of 9

Scan the site, then ask the AI engines

YouSwitch to Whole site and press Run. Then press Citation check.

IrisIt crawls up to 40 pages and groups the issues that repeat sitewide. The citation check asks live AI answer engines the questions your buyers ask and records whether your domain is named, and who is named instead.

  8. 8 Step 8 of 9

    Monitor it

YouPress the alarm on any result, or on a whole-site scan to watch every page it found. Daily, weekly or paused, per page or all at once.

IrisRe-scores on the cadence you chose, runs the citation check weekly, and emails you when a score drops, with the reason. Up to 5 pages on Explorer and 20 on Enterprise Domain.

  9. 9 Step 9 of 9

    Autopilot applies the fixes

YouConnect the domain, pick Cloudflare, WordPress or Shopify, paste one token. Content changes are emailed first; you have 48 hours to decline.

IrisHead tags, schema, alt text, llms.txt and Markdown mirrors go live at the edge with no change to your files, and every page gets a before and after score. 2 sites and 300 pages on Explorer, 20 sites and 1,500 pages on Enterprise Domain.

Which SEO standards does Iris check?

Iris checks your site against the four pillars Google and the industry actually rank on.

Technical

Crawlability, indexability, canonicals, structured data, mobile, HTTPS, robots and sitemap.

On-page

Titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, keyword targeting, intent and image alt text.

Content & authority

Content depth, E-E-A-T signals, internal linking and topical structure guidance.

Measurement

Every scan is scored on the same deterministic rubric, so a change in your score is a real change on your page, not model noise. Re-scan any time to see exactly what moved.

What is AI search, and why Iris scores it

More people now get answers straight from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews instead of clicking blue links. AI search, also called GEO / AEO, is about being the page those engines quote. Iris gives you a separate AI-search readiness score for exactly this, alongside your classic SEO score.

Structured data

Schema & JSON-LD (FAQ, Article, Organization) that let an AI understand and cite your page with confidence.

Clear answers

Question-style headings and scannable lists an answer engine can lift straight into its response.

Trust & freshness

Author, dates and entity signals (E-E-A-T) that decide whether an AI trusts you enough to quote you.

Agent-ready check New

Whole-site scans now test whether AI crawlers: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot, are allowed in by your robots.txt, whether your sitemap is fresh, and whether you have an llms.txt. If you don't, Iris writes one for you from the pages it just scanned: real titles, real URLs, real descriptions, ready to paste.

Daily monitoring Pro

Watch any audited page and Iris re-checks it every day at 06:00 UTC, if a score drops, you get an email naming exactly what fell, plus a Monday digest of every page you watch. Manage your watched pages right in the workspace.

Crawler guidance

Signals like llms.txt and a clean, indexable page so AI crawlers can find and read your best content.

A score predicts. Evidence proves.

Most tools stop at a score. Iris also goes and checks.

AEO · PREDICTED

Can an AI understand you?

Read from your page: structured data, entity markup, question-style headings, freshness, lists, an llms.txt. These are the signals that let an answer engine parse, quote and attribute you. Deterministic, the same page always scores the same, so a change in the number is a real change on your site.

GEO · OBSERVED

Does an AI actually name you?

Iris writes the questions your customers really ask, puts each one to several web-search AI engines (Groq web search and Gemini with Google Search, ChatGPT search when enabled), and checks whether your site is named in the answers. Not a prediction about your HTML, a record of what the engines said: a coverage grade from A to F, the tally per engine, and when you are not named, who was and in what share of answers.

You can score 98 for AEO and still not be cited. That gap is the whole point: the score tells you what to fix, the evidence tells you whether it worked.

We ran Iris on ourselves. Here is what happened.

Every SEO tool claims it works. This is our own site, scanned by Iris, fixed exactly as Iris advised, then re-scanned. Same rubric, same eleven pages, nothing hand-picked.

Page AI score before After Change
/work6793+26
/contact6280+18
/faq7385+12
/ai-playground7888+10

Four pages moved. Seven were already at or near ceiling and were left alone. The work took one afternoon: a byline and a date on the thin pages, real answers to the questions customers actually ask, and question-shaped headings so AI engines can lift the answer.

The honest part: one page showed no change because our CDN was still serving the old copy. Iris now flags that instead of reporting a misleading zero, because a tool that cannot tell “you changed nothing” from “we were served a stale page” is not worth trusting.

Autopilot (Explorer and above): connect your domain, pick where it is hosted, and Iris applies the fixes for you with no change to your files: on Cloudflare through a small Worker in your own account (one token paste), on WordPress through a plugin with your key inside, on Shopify through the store's own SEO fields and a one-line snippet. Head tags, schema, alt text, llms.txt and Markdown mirrors, plus IndexNow pings. Question-style headings and a FAQ block built only from sentences already on the page are emailed to you first and go live after a 48-hour window unless you decline. Before and after scores per page, an off switch per page, and a green line in the panel the moment your site is live. Explorer covers 2 sites and 300 pages, Enterprise Domain 20 sites and 1,500 pages; how it works, in plain words. Whole-site scans are built in on paid plans, and every audit includes a personalised link & citation strategy. Need keyword research or a done-for-you SEO campaign? FAQ

Iris questions, answered

Why pay for Iris when ChatGPT can review my page?

ChatGPT can comment on a page you paste in, but it cannot fetch your site itself, it will not give you the same score twice, and it cannot watch your pages over time. Iris reads your live HTML, scores it the same way every time, audits your whole site in one click, monitors pages daily and emails you if a score drops, and hands you copy-paste-ready fixes. It is a system you can act on and trust, not a one-off chat.

Can Iris audit my whole website, not just one page?

Yes. Paste one URL to audit a single page in depth, or use Scan whole site on a paid plan to audit many pages at once and see the issues that repeat across your site, so you can fix them at the template level and lift every page together.

Is Iris free to use?

Yes. You get a full single-page audit with both scores, copy-paste fixes and a growth roadmap free, with no sign-up. Paid plans add saved history, score tracking over time, daily page monitoring and whole-site scans.

Can Iris tell me if ChatGPT and other AI agents can read my site, and write my llms.txt?

Yes. Every whole-site scan includes an Agent-Ready check: Iris reads your robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot and tells you which AI crawlers are allowed in, limited or blocked; it checks how fresh your sitemap is; and it looks for an llms.txt file. If you don’t have one, Iris writes your llms.txt for you from the pages it just scanned, real titles, real URLs, real descriptions, grouped by page type and ready to paste at your site root. That file is how answer engines find your best content first.

What is the AI-ready pack, and why does a Markdown copy of my pages matter?

A typical web page is around 80% markup, we measured our own pricing page at 42,239 characters of HTML wrapping 8,284 characters of actual content. Search engines have spent decades learning to read through that; AI answer engines are younger, cheaper and far more likely to take what is easy to parse. Make my site AI-readable builds the fix in one step: an llms.txt index plus a plain-Markdown twin of every page, delivered as a zip with a README. Every title, URL and description comes from a page Iris actually fetched, so nothing is invented. Iris generates and verifies but never publishes, it has no credential for your server and never asks for one, so you upload the files yourself or let a platform plugin do it. Pages rendered entirely by JavaScript are reported as having no readable text rather than published empty, because that is the honest finding.
